Where to start with a Giant Gobstopper? The big daddy of sweets! Giant Gobstoppers are an exciting marvel of the sweet world, and also known as the nightmare (or bread and butter?) of all dentists.
As any UK based reader will recognise, the term ‘Gobstoppers’ sprung from the slang word ‘gob’ which means mouth. Therefore, Giant Gobstoppers seeming pretty self explanatory – you simply can’t fit one in your mouth. Many of our readers may find it interesting to learn that Giant Gobstoppers have a different name in the US, but no less a perfectly descriptive one, ‘Jawbreakers’. Unfortunately this does cause some confusion with a popular British rival.
While an exact year is hard to pin down, we know Giant Gobstoppers have been a favourite to school children between the two World Wars – so have to have been around at least from the early 1920s.
